Beijing: film director Fernand Melgar in the limelight

29.09.2009

Documentary film director Fernand Melgar will be featured at the interdisciplinary Crossing Festival, which takes place in Beijing from September 30 to October 10, 2009. He will present his multi-award winning films “La forteresse” (2008), “Exit, le droit de mourir” (2005), as well as the films “Remue-ménage” (2002), “La vallée de la jeunesse” (2005) and his collection of short films “Premier jour”. In addition, he will work directly with eight Chinese documentary filmmakers while leading a one-week workshop (September 30-October 4).
This project is a continuation of the collaboration between SWISS FILMS and the Caochangdi Workstation, founded by Wu Wenguang and Wen Hui. The project was launched in conjunction with the Crossing Festival in autumn 2008, featuring Peter Liechti, and continued the following May with Edna Politi in the spotlight.

The project was initiated by SWISS FILMS and is part of the “Swiss Chinese Cultural Explorations” cultural programme with which SWISS FILMS and Pro Helvetia promote selected projects for long-term exchanges between the artists and institutions of both countries.

The Crossing Festival (in October) and the May Festival (in May) have both established themselves as important independent platforms for documentary film and experimental video works, as well as contemporary dance and theatre. Their main focus is on the areas of “Film Forum” and “Performance Space”, in which the Chinese-Swiss dance project “The Mystery”, among others, can be seen.
