His enthusiasm and knowledge of mechanics made Heinrich Weiss into a creative inventor. In his print shop in Basel, he developed a bar code system in 1955 with which he was able to rapidly and accurately sort the different medication boxes for the blooming pharmaceutical industry of his town. Thus he was the first world-wide to make a workable bar code system. The bar code as we now know it was not introduced until 1972. Even as a boy, Heinrich Weiss already collected clocks and mechanical music boxes and admired the vast variety of technical innovations and solutions. In 1979 he adandoned the race of technical innovation by selling his printing company and fully concentrating on his collection, now expanded and open to the public in the Museum for Music Automats in Seewen, Switzerland.
