A cinematographic inquiry that attempts to shed light on the war of the Sonderbund (league of seven Catholic cantons) between October and November 1847, that led to the founding of modern Switzerland. The events of the period, and its spirit, are evoked above all from the point of view of the inhabitants of the Lucerne countryside and with the help of biographical fragments. Heated arguments between those in favour of renewal, and the conservatives, are at the heart of the film. Today as yesterday it is a question of a fear of foreigners and the difficult choice between openness and retrenchment. “Grenzgänge” makes it possible for the people of today, particularly those who have some personal or political relationship with the Sonderbund, to enter into a dialogue with the past. Indeed it is this play-off between past and present, between scenes of fiction and documentary evidence, that characterise the film.
