Based on C.F Ramuz’ novel, the film portrays a 1950s Alpine village on the brink of destruction because of the villagers’ hunger for money and power. Like other dairy farmers 25-year-old Joseph has suffered too many years of drought. And as each year passes, his hopes of marrying Victorine, the most prosperous farmer’s daughter, diminish. So he takes his cowherd higher up the Alp, where there is grass in abundance. But he doesn’t know that the Alp is doomed and cursed. Tonetti’s powerful film portrays the villagers in all their weakness. People who sell their souls to a powerful and disastrous force, all for the sake of money.
