Thoughts on the role competition has played in Man’s evolution. Competing for fame and glory? Or for no other reason than the pure pleasure of rising to a challenge? Man has always sought to overcome his limitations, in an effort to conquer the real world, and to subjugate his own fears. Every August a group of mountain guides from the former Soviet Union organises an international climbing competition, in the Tien-Shan mountains of Kirghizia. Participants must carry out a solo ascent of the 7'000m high Khan-Tengri, with its white marble peak. Considering the altitude and the technical difficulties involved, this is a challenge at the very limits of the humanly possible.
