Patrice Dubosson is a farmer. His leg was caught in machinery and so badly lacerated that doctors wanted to amputate it. Five months later, Patrice is back working his mountain pastures, feeling no pain and mowing the meadows himself. His surgeon is baffled. Melanie Ammann, a professional dancer, is in the opposite situation: her pain has only worsened following simple knee surgery. She can’t even climb the stairs at home, let alone get back on stage, and has slowly fallen into depression. Everyone experiences pain differently. Some suffer like martyrs, others recover quickly. How is this possible? Why is pain so very personal and vary so widely? Does suffering – or overcoming pain – still have any meaning when medicine constantly advances? Whether physical, emotional, acute, or chronic, it’s better to “go towards” pain rather than turn your back on it, say those who deal with it daily. This film dives into a world of both ordinary and extraordinary people, who help us better understand and manage pain since we all have to face it some day.
